Cebu & Bohol: The Perfect 10-Day Combo
Two islands, one ferry apart. Sardine tornadoes, whale sharks, 1,268 chocolate-colored hills, and canyoneering that'll make your heart race. All for backpacker prices.
The Best 10-Day Route
This is the route we wish someone had given us. It works south to north, minimizes backtracking, and hits everything worth doing.
Arrive at Cebu airport (CEB). Don't stay here β Cebu City is traffic and malls. Grab a bus to Moalboal (3h, $4) the same day.
Base yourself here for the sardine run, Kawasan canyoneering, and chill beach days. This is where you'll have the most fun.
Take an early bus to Oslob (2h, $3) for the whale sharks. Then head to Liloan port, catch the 30min ferry to Sibulan, bus to Dumaguete, then 2h fast ferry to Tagbilaran (Bohol). Sounds complicated β it's not, locals will point you the whole way.
Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, Loboc River, Alona Beach. Motorbike is a must here too ($6/day).
Tagbilaran airport (TAG) has direct flights to Manila ($25-40). Or fly out of Cebu.
Cebu: Moalboal & Beyond
π Sardine Run β Moalboal
Panagsama Beach Β· Walk from any Moalboal hostel
This is the main event. Millions of sardines form a swirling tornado 20 meters from the shore. No boat needed β just walk into the water with a mask and snorkel. The sardines are there 365 days a year. Best time: 7-9am when the water is calmest and the light is golden.
Sea turtles also hang out here. Look for them near the sea grass. Don't touch them β it's illegal and you'll get yelled at by every dive shop on the beach.
π€Ώ Snorkel & mask rental: $3/day | π’ Turtles: free
π§ Kawasan Falls Canyoneering
Badian Β· 30 min motorbike from Moalboal
3-4 hours of jumping off cliffs, sliding down waterfalls, and swimming through turquoise canyons. You don't need experience β guides handle everything. The biggest jump is 12 meters (optional, you can walk around).
The standard tour costs $20-25 including helmet, life jacket, guide, and lunch. Book through your hostel or any tour shop in Moalboal. Bring waterproof shoes (rentals are $2 but they're gross).
π° Tour: $20-25 | π Shoe rental: $2 | π Transport from Moalboal: $5
π¦ Oslob Whale Sharks β Honest Take
Oslob Β· 2h south of Moalboal
Controversial but still on most backpackers' lists. Fishermen feed the whale sharks from 6am-12pm, which brings them close enough to snorkel with. Ethical concerns are real β some argue feeding disrupts migration patterns. If you go: don't wear sunscreen in the water, keep 4m distance, don't touch.
Practical: arrive at 6am to beat the crowds. 30 minutes in the water. $15 for foreigners. Afterward, head straight to the ferry port for Bohol β there's nothing else in Oslob worth staying for.
π€Ώ Whale shark swim: $15 | π Go at 6am or don't go
Bohol: Tarsiers & Chocolate Hills
π« Chocolate Hills
Carmen Β· 1h motorbike from Tagbilaran
1,268 dome-shaped limestone hills that turn brown in the dry season β hence "chocolate." The viewpoint in Carmen is the standard spot ($1 entry). For a better experience with fewer tourists, go to the Sagbayan Peak viewpoint instead (same hills, different angle, way fewer selfie sticks).
Ride a motorbike through the winding road between the hills. That's the real highlight β not the viewpoint platform.
ποΈ Viewpoint entry: $1 | ποΈ Motorbike rental: $6/day
π Tarsier Sanctuary
Corella Β· 30 min from Tagbilaran
Philippine tarsiers are the world's smallest primates β they fit in your palm, have eyes bigger than their brains, and can rotate their heads 180 degrees. Go to the official Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella, not the tourist trap in Loboc (where tarsiers are stressed by flash photography).
Walk the trail quietly. Guides point out the tarsiers clinging to branches. No touching, no flash, no loud noises. They're nocturnal and easily stressed to death β literally.
ποΈ Entry: $2 | β° Open 9am-4pm
Where to Stay
Cebu β Moalboal: Chief Mau Hostel ($5, on Panagsama Beach β walk out the door and the sardines are right there), Moalboal Backpacker Lodge ($6, quieter, hammocks).
Bohol β Alona Beach: Moon Fools Hostel ($7, social vibe), Bohol Coco Farm ($5, inland, peaceful).
Bohol β Loboc: Fox & Firefly Cottages ($10 private, on the river β splurge for one night).
