Oslob Whale Sharks: Price, Ethics & the Honest Verdict
Swimming with whale sharks in Oslob is a once-in-a-lifetime experience — and a controversial one. Here's exactly what it costs, how it works, and the debate you should know about before you book.
🦈 The Quick Answer
💰 Real Prices (2026)
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Whale shark viewing (foreigner) | ₱1,500 ($26) | 30 min in the water |
| Registration / eco fee | ₱50 ($1) | Mandatory |
| Snorkel gear | Included | Mask + life jacket |
| Private boat | ₱2,500-3,000 ($45-55) | If you want the boat to yourself |
| Bus from Cebu City | ₱180-220 ($3-4) | 3.5-4 hours, South Bus Terminal |
Note: 50 pesos of your viewing fee goes to a barangay fund. Tipping boatmen is appreciated but optional.
⚖️ The Ethics Debate (Honest Version)
Here's what nobody in Oslob will tell you: the whale sharks don't naturally gather in this bay. Since 2011, local fishermen have been feeding them tiny shrimp (uyap) to attract them for tourism. It works — they now show up daily — but it comes with real costs.
🌊 Donsol: The Ethical Alternative
If the feeding bothers you, go to Donsol in the Bicol region (8 hours from Manila or a short flight to Legazpi). There, whale sharks are seen in the wild — no feeding, no guarantees. You might see one, you might see none. That's the honest trade.
Donsol basics: ₱4,500-6,500 ($80-115) for a private boat with a Butanding Interaction Officer (mandatory). Season runs November to June. Sightings are common but never guaranteed.
My recommendation: if the animal experience matters more than the photo, Donsol is the better choice. If you're on the Cebu loop anyway and want the guaranteed encounter, Oslob — just go in with open eyes.
🗺️ How to Do Oslob (Step by Step)
📅 When to Go
Oslob runs year-round (unlike Donsol) — the feeding guarantees sightings every single day. Weekdays are quieter than weekends. The morning window (6-8am) has the calmest water and shortest waits.
